China, which claims democratically-ruled Taiwan as its own territory, staged large-scale war games around the island last August, following a visit to Taipei by then-President Nancy Pelosi. United States House of Representatives.

Ms. Tsai will visit Guatemala and Belize, two diplomatic allies, on a trip that begins next week, but will also stop in New York and Los Angeles.

In California, she should meet the current speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, which constitutes the most delicate stage of her trip, although the presidential office of Taiwan refused to confirm this meeting.

Taiwan’s defense ministry has contingency plans in place to deal with any action by China during Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s overseas visit, the vice defense minister said Wednesday. Po Horng-huei, before Tsai travels to the United States and Central America next week.

Asked by reporters on the sidelines of a parliamentary session about the possibility of China holding more drills when Ms Tsai is overseas, Po said the armed forces were ready.

“When it comes to what the Chinese Communists have done in the past, the Ministry of Defense has a good idea of the situation and looks at the worst-case scenario,” he said.

“During the president’s overseas visit, the defense ministry has put in place contingency plans for all China’s actions,” Po added, declining to give details.

The United States said there was no reason for China to react to Tsai’s trip, saying such transits are routine and have happened many times before.

China, which condemned the US stopover planned by Ms Tsai, has continued its military activities around Taiwan since August, although on a much smaller scale.

Taiwan rejects China’s sovereignty claims, saying the Taiwanese people can decide their future.
