Jon Rahm leads Max Homa by three strokes heading into final round of Genesis Invitational as he seeks to reclaim world No. 1 spot from Scottie Scheffler

Jon Rahm is poised to regain the world No. 1 spot after taking a three-stroke lead in the final round of the Genesis Invitational.

The Spaniard shot an unblemished six-under 65 on Day 3 in California to lead the field at 15 under, with American Max Homa his closest challenger at 12 under ahead of Kevin Mitchell at 11 under and Patrick Cantlay at 10.

Rahm, the world number 3, will climb to the top of the leaderboard if he wins at Riviera Country Club and current world number 1 Scottie Scheffler does not finish second in solo.

Scheffler is tied for 15th right now, 10 shots behind Rahm on five under par.

Rory McIlroy, the man Scheffler dropped to the top of the leaderboard when he won the WM Phoenix Open last week, is a worse off hit on four under after a two for 73.

Tiger Woods fired his best round of the week, shooting a four-under 67 including an eagle three at the start of his back nine, to sit on three-under par, tied for 26th.

Tiger Woods apologized after handing Justin Thomas a tampon on Thursday, an action he said was “meant to be fun and fun”

The 47-year-old, returning to competitive golf for the first time since The Open Championship at St Andrews in July, has apologized for any offense he may have caused after handing his playing partner a tampon Justin Thomas Thursday.

At the top of the leaderboard, Rahm is looking for a third win of the year following his triumphs at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and American Express in January.

Rahm said: “I can argue about any event I play to be able to tick something off, but the fact that Tiger is the host, the fact that he is playing here and the history of this golf course in as a venue is why I wish I could win.”

The 28-year-old could also move up to the top of the standings if he finishes squarely second, Scheffler below 23rd in solo and McIlroy does not win the tournament.

Rahm finished his third round with birdies, narrowly missing a 12-foot eagle attempt on the first and sinking a 24-foot putt for a win at 18, in addition to picking up shots at four, eight, nine and 11 .

Max Homa is in contention to win his second Genesis Invitational title in three years

Homa, who started the third round with a one-stroke advantage as he aims to win this tournament for the second time in three years, was tied with Rahm at times but back-to-back bogeys at 15 and 16 plus birdie of Rahm at 18. created a significant gap.

Homa said: “Chasing the hottest golfer on the planet is an exciting opportunity. I think life is about opportunities, seizing them and then, when you have them, taking advantage of them. I’m excited to test myself with it.”

Rahm and Homa are respectively first and second in the FedExCup standings.

Watch the final round of the Genesis Invitational live on Sky Sports Golf from 4.30pm on Sunday, with a replay at 7.30pm on Sky Sports Main Event.
