College is an enormous financial commitment, and tuition costs continue to rise every year.

According to the U.S. News and World Report, the average tuition and fees at private colleges comes out to $39,723 for the 2022-2023 school year.

But advertised “sticker prices” for colleges are not what the average student is actually paying, says U.S. News and World Report.

At Princeton University, for example, advertised tuition and fees for the 2021-2022 school year was $56,010, but students paid an average of $16,562 after need-based financial aid, according to U.S. News and World Report.

What is the most expensive college?

Though most students do not pay tuition in full, colleges can have intimidating “sticker prices.” These are the most expensive private colleges in the United States and their sticker prices, according to U.S. News and World Report:

  • Kenyon College (Ohio) – $66,490
  • Franklin & Marshall College (Pennsylvania) – $65,844
  • Tufts University (Massachusetts) – $65,222
  • Brown University (Rhode Island) – $65,146
  • Colorado College – $65,028
  • Vassar College (New York) – $64,800
  • University of Southern California – $64,726
  • Colgate University (New York) – $64,290
  • Boston College (Massachusetts) – $64,176
  • Amherst College (Massachusetts) – $64,100

These sticker prices do not include room and board or other living expenses. Kenyon University, the most expensive school on this list, reports total charges above $80,000 for students living in its dormitory facilities.

What is the least expensive private college?

Public colleges are typically cheaper than private colleges, but if you’re going the private route and want to get the most bang for your buck, these are the least expensive private colleges in the United States, according to U.S. News and World Report:

  • Boricua College (New York) – $6,025
  • Brigham Young University (Utah) – $6,304
  • Stillman College (Alabama) – $11,392
  • Tougaloo College (Mississippi) – $11,398
  • Voorhees College (South Carolina) – $12,630
  • National University (California) – $13,320
  • Allen University (South Carolina) – $13,540
  • Talladega College (Alabama) – $13,571
  • Virginia Union University (Virginia) – $14,230
  • Alice Lloyd College (Kentucky) – $14,250

What is the average cost to attend a public college?

Public college prices vary greatly depending on whether or not a student is attending a school in their home state or paying out-of-state tuition. According to U.S. News and World Report, the average in-state sticker price for a public college is $10,423 for the 2022-2023 school year. The average out-of-state sticker price is $22,953.
