The reach of Canadian news outlets on the internet — including the Gazette — is dwindling. Tech giants Google and Meta have announced their decision to block Canadian news content from their platforms in response to Canada’s Bill C-18, otherwise known as the Online News Act. The law passed through the Senate on June 22 and mandates tech giants to compensate news outlets for the content shared on their platform. This move will impact not only the likes of the Globe and Mail or the Toronto Star, but also small independent media and student newspapers such as the Gazette. Ukraine is now the most heavily mined country on Earth and its army is suffering from a critical shortage of men and equipment able to clear the frontlines, the country’s defence minister has said, as soldiers spoke of heavy casualties in the engineering brigades. In an urgent appeal to allies, Oleksii Reznikov told the Guardian his soldiers were unearthing five mines for every square metre in places, laid by Russian troops to try to thwart Ukraine’s counteroffensive. He said the vast minefields could be traversed, but that it was critically important that allies “expand and expedite” the training already being…

Wildfire is bearing down on the capital city of Canada’s Northwest Territories, with thousands of people under evacuation orders. The conflagration – which has already razed one remote community – could reach the city of Yellowknife by the weekend, say officials. Another fire is threatening the community of Hay River. One evacuee told the CBC her car began melting as they drove through embers while fleeing the town on Sunday. The Northwest Territories declared a state of emergency late on Tuesday as it battles more than 200 wildfires. Hay River Mayor Kandis Jameson estimated that about 500 people were still in…

The state board of education Wednesday delayed action on a proposal that would bar transgender girls from participating on high school girls’ athletic teams in Alaska, with several board members saying they wanted more time to consider the issue. Opponents of the proposal called it discriminatory and unconstitutional and said it would likely lead to litigation. Supporters, including Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy, said it is needed to ensure fairness in girls’ sports. The board heard more than 2 1/2 hours of public testimony Wednesday, in addition to receiving roughly 1,400 pages of written testimony ahead of the meeting, and went…

A Republican senator welcomed Canada’s new defence minister to the portfolio Wednesday with a pointed critique of what he called a “feeble commitment” to defence spending by America’s northern neighbour. Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) called out the federal Liberal government’s consistent failure to meet NATO’s two per cent spending target — and urged the man likely to take over command of the continent’s defences to do the same. “Canada is not even close to its two per cent commitment,” Sullivan said during a confirmation hearing for U.S. Air Force Lt.-Gen. Gregory Guillot, President Joe Biden’s nominee to take over Norad.…

It seems like Canada has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. The Bank of Canada was blamed for tanking global bond markets earlier this month when it unexpectedly raised benchmark interest rates to the highest in 22 years. Then there’s the toxic, Martian-like haze from wildfires raging in British Columbia to Nova Scotia. And yet, these events obscure a more relevant reality, which is that Canada is booming like it never has before. Unprecedented population growth, record-low unemployment, the most diversified economy in its 156-year history and a world-beating stock market since 2021 are contributing to…

Mangroves have been ‘levelled down’ for tourism in the past. Can conscious travel to the archipelago of over 17,000 islands help? Mangroves are drawing tourists to Indonesia, as the archipelago tries to replant or conserve carbon-rich coastal areas that have been decimated by human activity. Connie Sihombing, a 50-year-old resident of Jakarta, does not mind that she can hear traffic or planes flying above as she paddles her kayak through murky waters and the arching roots of mangrove trees. “I’ve travelled far, yet I had no idea that close to home lies this fascinating and beautiful park,” she said, referring to a…
