Financial assistance to refugees from Ukraine in Poland is planned to be canceled in the first quarter of 2024. The current provisions in the law will not be renewed. The government believes that there will be no need to extend payments to Ukrainian refugees, RBC-Ukraine reports citing the PAP news agency . Government speaker Peter Müller announced the cessation of support for those fleeing the war on air from the PAP studio. He was asked about further financial assistance to Ukrainian citizens living in Poland. “The decisions that were made after the start of the war are temporary in nature. Therefore, these provisions are gradually losing force, it’s…
The state of Alaska broke its 2019 record for cruise ship tourism this summer, with Alaska’s capital city recording 1.65 million passengers this year, according to figures released Thursday at a meeting of the Juneau Chamber of Commerce. Most Alaska tourists arrive via cruise ship, and Juneau sees all but a handful of the cruise ships that visit Alaska each summer, making the city’s figures a proxy for the industry as a whole. The newly published figures mark a rebound — and then some — from the COVID-19 pandemic emergency. Juneau recorded 1.2 million cruise ship tourists in 2022, 124,600…
The Young and the Restless star Eric Braeden had some choice words for Air Canada, ripping into the airline over social media about his son’s recent “dismal” flying experience. Braeden took to X, formerly Twitter, on Monday to blast the airline after his son was told by company staff that he was too late to travel to Florida on a flight departing Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. “Air Canada is a dismal airline, with an arrogant staff, mediocre service, etc!” his post starts. The 82-year-old, famous for playing the role of Victor Newman on the long-running soap opera, insisted that there…
Hundreds of international students are scrambling after an Ontario college revoked their January admissions letters, prompting concerns about how a lack of provincial oversight keeps colleges from facing repercussions for admitting more students than they can handle. Northern College, which rescinded 500 international student admissions in July, says it has once again told some 200 students, primarily from India, that they won’t be able to attend its campuses. Savan Sabu lives in India and was planning to study supply chain management at Northern College’s Timmins campus with hopes of landing a job in a multinational company. Now, Sabu is out…
World Expos provide a unique opportunity for governments, companies, international organizations, and citizens to share ideas, innovate, collaborate, and celebrate ingenuity. Today on the margins of the Team Canada Trade Mission to Japan, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, participated in the concept unveiling for the Canada Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. The Canada Pavilion will embrace the natural cycles of Canada’s seasons, including the thaw of frozen riverways at the onset of spring. The pavilion’s exterior architecture is inspired by these spring-time ice formations, while inside, a dynamic public presentation will invite…
JERUSALEM – An Israeli government ministry has drafted a wartime proposal to transfer the Gaza Strip’s 2.3 million people to Egypt’s Sinai peninsula, drawing condemnation from the Palestinians and worsening tensions with Cairo.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office played down the report compiled by the Intelligence Ministry as a hypothetical exercise — a “concept paper.” But its conclusions deepened long-standing Egyptian fears that Israel wants to make Gaza into Egypt’s problem, and revived for Palestinians memories of their greatest trauma — the uprooting of hundreds of thousands of people who fled or were forced from their homes during the fighting surrounding…
As the Israel-Hamas war threatens to widen into other regions, Global Affairs Canada (GAC) says the government is not guaranteeing assisted departure for citizens who may want to leave Lebanon and is again encouraging immediate evacuation via commercial flights. In an update Sunday evening, GAC said it “sent a message to Canadians with close ties to Lebanon via diaspora media in Canada” about the “deteriorating situation in Lebanon.”But it noted that Canadians there “should not rely on” assisted departure or evacuation flights. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly told Canadians in Lebanon to “get out” last week(opens in a new tab),…
Air Canada says the country’s passenger rights overhaul will hardly hurt its bottom line. On a call with analysts Monday, chief financial officer John Di Bert said the financial impact of the reforms will be “incremental.” He says the full impact of the updated rights charter will become more apparent in 2024, noting there would be some added pressure. In April, the federal government announced sweeping reforms to the Air Passenger Protection Regulations, with the specifics now being hashed out by Canada’s transport regulator. The changes appear to scrap a loophole through which airlines have denied customers compensation for flight…
The Environics Institute, a Canadian research agency that conducts public opinion surveys and collects data on government, social and economic issues, has released its annual study on Canadian public opinion on immigration. The report found that over the past year, Canadians have become pessimistic about the direction of the country and the economy. It notes that they have doubts about the government’s ability to plan for future challenges. This includes the perceived challenges posed by immigration. The Environics Institute worked in partnership with the Century Initiative, which is a non-partisan organization that aims to implement policies and programs that would…
Canada’s federal and provincial governments have invested at least $7.6 billion in the past three years in electric vehicle battery plants, creating employment and bolstering the country’s position as an EV manufacturer, data from the federal government shows. The money, from federal and provincial governments, was used to woo 10 EV battery companies to open plants in Ontario and Quebec, close to Canada’s eastern vehicle manufacturing centres, according to statistics from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. Plans for two more plants in Granby and Bécancour, Que., are also underway, but investment information on those two plants is subject to…
