As part of the mobilization, at least 123 new military units were created in Russia, according to a study by the Conflict Intelligence Team. It is emphasized that their real number may be even greater.
Most of them are nominally motorized rifle regiments; CIT found 77 such units. The researchers also recorded mentions of 18 separate motorized rifle battalions, five engineer-sapper, five tank regiments, seven artillery regiments and 11 artillery divisions. Not only were new units formed from the conscripted reservists, they were also sent to personnel units to make up for combat losses.
Regardless of which unit the mobilized person ended up in, he could end up at the front just two weeks after the start of mobilization. At the same time, a significant proportion of recruits continued to remain in training centers and units. They were sent to the front until January 2023.
In the first six months of the full-scale invasion, almost all units and formations of the ground forces, airborne forces and marines of the Russian Navy took part in the war and suffered losses. By the beginning of mobilization, all units experienced a significant shortage of personnel. The irretrievable losses of the Russian military, according to CIT estimates, at that time could amount to 20–25 thousand people, and the shortage of personnel in the units participating in the hostilities could range from 55 to 70 thousand people.
The total need for personnel units could be about 90 thousand people. Thus, approximately a third of the 300 thousand mobilized could be used to replenish personnel units. The rest, CIT suggests, were distributed into new specially created units.
