Asked by reporters on the sidelines of a parliamentary session about the possibility of China holding more drills when Ms Tsai is overseas, Po said the armed forces were ready.
“When it comes to what the Chinese Communists have done in the past, the Ministry of Defense has a good idea of the situation and looks at the worst-case scenario,” he said.
“During the president’s overseas visit, the defense ministry has put in place contingency plans for all China’s actions,” Po added, declining to give details.
The United States said there was no reason for China to react to Tsai’s trip, saying such transits are routine and have happened many times before.
China, which condemned the US stopover planned by Ms Tsai, has continued its military activities around Taiwan since August, although on a much smaller scale.
Taiwan rejects China’s sovereignty claims, saying the Taiwanese people can decide their future.
